The Animal Referral Hospital is Australia’s largest veterinary specialist and emergency group, providing outstanding veterinary care for pets across our eight hospitals nationally.

Our ARH Essendon Fields location has a 24/7 emergency department and specialist veterinary referral services in surgery and internal medicine. This is supported by a range of on-site facilities, such as advanced diagnostic imaging, a laboratory and fully equipped surgical theatres.

ARH Essendon Fields is part of the larger ARH group which opened in Sydney in 1999.

Dr Helsa Teh

Dr Helsa Teh

Helsa is a small animal internal medicine specialist with a keen interest in oncology, urology, autoimmune conditions and feline medicine. Helsa graduated from the University of Sydney in 2007, following which she worked in general practice for 2 years where she realised her interest lay in small animal medicine. She then returned to the University of Sydney in 2010 and completed a rotating internship. Enjoying the teaching environment, she stayed on another 4 years as the department head of both the Primary Accession and Emergency Service, helping both with teaching veterinary students and growing these services. Helsa then moved south of the border to complete a residency in small animal medicine at the University of Melbourne. Trading in the sunny Sydney beaches for delightful coffee, Helsa stayed on in chilly Melbourne to work in referral private practice. Since graduation, Helsa has attained her Memberships in Small Animal Medicine, Masters of Veterinary Studies, Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Clinical Studies and a research masters on virulence factors of E.coli from urinary tract infections in dogs. Helsa has also presented research abstracts in Australia and overseas.

Dr Jiaying Ng

Dr Jiaying Ng

Jiaying graduated from the Univerity of Melbourne in 20212, and spent a year in general practice in Singapore. She returned to Melbourne in 2014 for a surgical internship at the Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency. She then went into a rotating internship followed by a surgical residency at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Canada. She also completed a Masters in Veterinary Science during her time in Canada. Unable to resist the charms of Melbourne, Jiaying returned again to Melbourne in 2019 as a surgery registrar and received her board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2021. Jiaying Joined the ARH Surgery team in 2022. Her main areas of interest are orthopedics, neurosurgery and minimally invasive procedures.

Dr Simon Kudnig

Dr Simon Kudnig

Dr. Simon Kudnig graduated with an Honours Degree in Veterinary Science (BVSc (Hons)) from1 Toe University of Melbourne in 1990, and a Masters degree in Veterinary Science (MVSc) in 1995. He subsequently completed a Residency in Small Animal Surgery at Colorado State University (CSU) in the United States in 2003, followed by advanced training as a Clinical Fellow n Surgical Oncology at CSU's Animal ,t, Cancer Center. In 2004, Dr. Kudnig passed his American (ACVS) surgical board examinations and also became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS), making him a registered Specialist in Small Animal Surgery in Australia and the US. Over the years, he has published scientific and peer-reviewed articles, and authored textbook chapters. He is a co-editor of the leading textbook entitled "Veterinary Surgical Oncology". In 2012, Dr. Kudnig was accepted as an ACJS Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology. His primary interest is in Surgical Oncology, however he has extensive experience in all aspects of Veterinary Surgery, including soft tissue surgery, neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Simon Kudnig heads the Surgery team at the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) in Melbourne. He is well supported by his Surgical team, as well as our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) team,, available 24 hours a day, and our Internal Medicine team, headed by our Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Rob Lahue. This allows us to collaborate with specialists in other fields to provide quality veterinary care around the clock.

Dr Tania Shaw

Dr Tania Shaw

Tania graduated from the University of Sydney in 2007 with first class honours, and then spent 3 years in general practice in Melbourne.

Following her passion for Small Animal Surgery, she completed a small animal rotating internship at Queensland Veterinary Specialists in Brisbane in 2011, followed by a surgical internship at Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre in 2012, and another surgical internship at the Murdoch University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Perth in 2013.

Tania then returned to Melbourne to complete a 3-year Small Animal Surgery Residency at Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre, training under our very own Specialist Surgeon, Simon Kudnig. After completing her Residency, Tania joined Animal Referral Hospital as a Surgery Registrar while preparing to sit her ACVS Board examinations in Small Animal Surgery. She passed her exams in March 2020 and is now a ACVS boarded Specialist Surgeon, making her a recognised specialist in Small Animal Surgery in Australia and the United States.

Tania enjoys all aspects of surgery, however her main interest is in soft tissue surgery, particularly surgical oncology, wound management, reconstructive surgery and abdominal surgery.
