Are you interested in becoming an ECC veterinarian? Not quite sure the best place to start? The Animal Referral Hospital is pleased to offer a position for a Junior Emergency Vet to join our team. The position would suit an energetic, motivated veterinarian with a minimum of   1-3 years clinical experience, who is interested in learning more about emergency and critical care.

We believe our team is our best asset. Under the mentorship of our ECC specialist and 6 other senior emergency vets who have achieved MANZCVS, PG Cert and/or residency training, the junior ECC vet program includes rotation through daytime, night-time, evening and weekend shifts.  Five weeks annual leave, 1-week paid study leave, and a salary above the award is offered. Regular case discussion, morning specialist rounds, in-house tutorials and daily interactions with specialists in all departments at our hospital will enhance the learning experience during your time with us.

The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) is a well-established group of specialist veterinary hospitals. We offer a wide range of specialist services and provide 24-hour emergency and critical care through our facilities in NSW, ACT, QLD, VIC and SA. The role

You will work predominantly under the guidance and mentorship of our internal medicine specialists, as well as more broadly within our team of professional veterinarians and expert nursing staff. You will also have close involvement with our other departments.

Interns are expected to participate in daily rounds, journal club meetings and case presentations. They will be encouraged to complete a published work during their internship and will be supported in the completion of ANZCVS medicine membership examination.

About us

The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Essendon Fields is a 24 hour per day, 7 days a week hospital with a dedicated team working across ECC, internal medicine and surgery. We aim to provide a responsive, comprehensive emergency and referral service to Victorian veterinarians, their clients and their patients.

We are looking for an experienced and qualified surgical veterinary nurse to work with two Specialist surgeons, an intern & a highly skilled nursing team. ARH Essendon Fields are expanding their surgical nursing team due increased cases as well as having a second specialist surgeon on board.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with surgical consultations & patient examinations
  • Carry out surgical patient admission and discharge procedures
  • Maintenance of paperless patient charts and records
  • Performing IV catheterisation, blood collection and laboratory work
  • Assisting with diagnostic procedures (Radiographs, CT & MRI’s)
  • Theatre setup
  • Surgical patient preparation
  • Anaesthetic monitoring
  • Assisting surgeons in theatre
  • Post-operative patient care
  • Instrument cleaning, maintenance and autoclaving
  • Assisting with In-patient management, feeding, toileting, medicating, drain & feeding tube care etc.

 Skills and qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years surgical nursing experience (preferably in a specialist/referral environment but not essential)
  • Minimum Certificate IV or equivalent
  • Experience with Ventilators (is advantageous but not essential)
  • Knowledge of Rx works / Smart flow will be highly regarded
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a team or independently
  • Exceptional time management and organisational skills
  • Exceptional customer service and strong communication skills
  • Highly motivated, reliable, flexibility with working hours and have a strong work ethic

About the hospital

ARH Melbourne is a 24-hour emergency and referral centre, with a large team of emergency Veterinarians supporting the specialist centre. The centre has specialists in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Critical Care. Dr. Simon Kudnig, who is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVSc), a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Dip ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology, is the head of the surgery department. We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery including advanced surgical oncologic procedures. We are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation, TPLO, Kyon equipment (Pauls, THR), Ligasure, plating systems, neurosurgery equipment, as well as a CT scanner and MRI unit on-site.

About the position

The Surgery department is staffed by 2 specialist surgeons (Dr. Simon Kudnig and Dr. Tania Shaw), a surgical intern, and a team of surgical nurses. The surgical intern is expected to become competent in assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management, patient discharges and medical records. The intern will also be trained and be expected to become competent in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The intern will also be involved in the anaesthesia of patients, as well as the post-operative care of patients and transfer of patients to the intensive care unit. Assistance in preparation for membership of the ANZCVS will be offered and interns will be encouraged to seek residency training following the completion of the internship and will be assisted in such training opportunities.
