Dr Lance Wilson

Small Animal Surgery Specialist

Lance graduated from the University of Queensland in 2000 and after eight years in general practice, including the obligatory UK locum circuit, returned to UQ as a staff surgeon.

He commenced a residency training program in 2010 and in 2015 attained Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal surgery.

Lance was head of the small animal surgery department at UQ until leaving in January 2017 to help create ARH Brisbane as a founding partner.

Lance remains passionate about all aspects of surgery, however has a special interest in neurosurgery, complex fracture repair and limb deformity correction.

Lance is kept busy and grounded by his beautiful wife Kirsten, three gorgeous children, a pack of dogs and a few tame cattle. In his little spare time, Lance enjoys the outdoors, spending time with his family and hobbling around the football field.

Dr Jarrod Drew

Small Animal Surgery Specialist

Jarrod trained at the University of Queensland before undertaking specialist training in small animal surgery at Murdoch University, Western Australia. 

He has attained a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education, a Dual Masters Degree in Small Animal Surgery, and is a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons. Jarrod is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Jarrod is passionate about all aspects of surgery with special interests in Brachycephalic airway disease, cruciate disease, neurosurgery, and fracture repair. 

Dr Elizabeth Hoffman

Casey grew up on the beaches of the Sunshine Coast. She graduated from the University of Queensland, with honours, in 2013. She spent six years in general practice where she developed a passion for small animal surgery, particularly lameness, fracture repair and brachycephalic surgery.

She completed two years of surgical internship and became a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons. She is now completing her surgical residency here at ARH to become a specialist surgeon.

In her spare time, Casey is kept busy by her two young boys and her little mixed breed dog, Bailey.

Dr Farrah Harris

Farrah graduated from the University of Queensland with honours in 2020.

She grew up in Gympie, QLD, before moving to Brisbane to complete her university degree. Since graduation, Farrah has completed two veterinary internships, following her passion for small animal surgery, particularly spinal surgery and angular limb correction.

In her spare time, Farrah enjoys travelling, going to the beach and spending time with her two dogs, Charlie the Maltese cross, and Frankie the Miniature Dachshund.

Dr Colin Yeung

Veterinary Intern (Surgery)

Colin graduated from the University of Queensland with honours in 2022. He was born and raised in Hong Kong and moved to Brisbane to study veterinary science. During his university years, he developed a strong interest in surgery. Prior to commencing the surgery internship, he also completed a rotating internship here at ARH. Outside of work, Colin enjoys playing (but more often watching) soccer matches, and spending time with his cat, Hedwig.

Dr Fiona Krait

Fiona graduated from Royal Veterinary College in London in 2019. She was born in France, and grew up in Paris and various other locations within the UK. She is passionate about surgery, especially soft tissue. Outside of work, Fiona enjoys karate, reading, board games and exploring Australia with her German Shepherd Sylphrena and cat Kelsier.

Dr Elizabeth Dill-Macky

Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist

Following graduation from the University of Queensland in 1982, Elizabeth completed an internship in small animal clinical studies at the University of Sydney.

Her specialty training in small animal internal medicine was undertaken in the USA with a residency at the University of Florida followed by a year as a clinical instructor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth subsequently worked as a small animal medical registrar at the University of Sydney for eight years before becoming one of the first internal medicine specialists and directors of the Animal Referral Hospital in Sydney.

Elizabeth spent seven years living overseas with her husband and Morris, their cat, working in Switzerland, at the University of Bern’s veterinary hospital, and at a private specialist and emergency hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

She is one of the founding partners of the ARH Brisbane specialist and emergency hospital.

Elizabeth is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal medicine.

Dr Emily Cook

Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist

BVSc, FANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine)

Emily graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, first class honours in 2006 and worked in small animal practice in Brisbane for a year.

She then undertook a small animal rotating internship at the University of Queensland veterinary teaching hospital in 2008 and it was during her internship she developed a love of internal medicine.

Emily achieved Membership to the Small Animal Medicine Chapter of the ANZCVS in 2010 and started her formal residency training at the University of Queensland in 2012. During her time at the University of Queensland she was heavily involved in the teaching and mentoring of veterinary students and was awarded Best Clinician by the final year students in 2016.

She successfully passed her fellowship exams in small animal medicine in July 2017.

Emily enjoys all aspect of internal medicine and has particular interests in gastrointestinal, kidney and immunologic disease. She also enjoys clinical teaching and places great importance on client education.

She is grounded by her husband and Golden Retriever, Stanley.

Dr Gemma Birnie

Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist

Gemma graduated from Massey University in New Zealand with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with honours in 2009.

She worked in general practice on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria for 2 years, before completing an internship at Sydney University.

After completion of her internship, Gemma worked as an emergency veterinarian in a private specialist clinic in Melbourne.

In 2014, she moved to Queensland, undertaking an internal medicine residency at a Brisbane specialist centre.

Gemma successfully passed her fellowship exams in 2018.

She has particular interests in immune mediated disease, infectious disease and neurology.

Gemma’s hobbies outside of work include bushwalking, baking, flower arranging, and spending time with her partner and cheeky Wirehaired Dachshund, Hazel.

Dr Jordan Fletcher

Medicine Resident

Jordan graduated from the University of Queensland in 2020 with first class honours. She received the ASAV Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Award, the VSS Award for Excellence in Small Animal Medicine, and the RHG Burns Memorial Prize.

After completing two internships at the Animal Referral Hospital, she spent time in general practice, then returned to us to complete an internal medicine residency. Jordan enjoys all aspects of internal medicine. Her particular interests include gastroenterology, endocrinology, and nephrology.

In her spare time, she spends time with her partner and her two naughty dogs, Indy and George.

Dr Maurine Thomson

Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Oncology Specialist

Maurine graduated from the University of Queensland in 1987 and worked as a new graduate in mixed practice in Maffra, Victoria and Moruya in New South Wales.

After several years travelling and working as a locum, she settled on a career in surgery and commenced a surgical internship in 1993.

Maurine completed a surgical residency at Murdoch University in 1996 before taking up a registrar position at the University of Queensland. The following year she undertook additional training in surgical oncology via a fellowship at Colorado State University and in 1998 attained fellowship in small animal surgery with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.

Since 1997 Maurine has worked exclusively in veterinary oncology. She is a registered specialist in small animal surgery and surgical oncology. Her strong interests are in mast cell tumours, oral tumours and thoracic and reconstructive surgery.

Maurine has written several book chapters on surgical oncology and is a recognised supervisor of specialist oncologists in Australia.

Her other non-veterinary interests include bushwalking, catering to the needs of two teenagers, a 13-year-old Cavalier King Charles (without a heart murmur!), four cats and a large garden. Her husband supports her and their friends with his craft brewing, and the bar is always open!

Dr Kathleen O'Connell

Oncology Specialist

Kathleen has been dedicated to the field of oncology since working as a researcher on the human melanoma vaccine trial at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2001.

She credits her background in immunology research and publication of a thesis on tumour cell metastasis with piquing her interest in the specialty of oncology. After a number of years in cancer research she completed a bachelor of veterinary science, graduating from the University of Queensland in 2006 with first class honours. Following graduation, she worked in general practice in Brisbane before commencing training as a resident in veterinary oncology in 2008.

In 2010 she attained membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal medicine and in 2013 achieved fellowship of the ANZCVS in veterinary oncology, becoming a registered specialist in the field. Her main areas of interest include haematological cancers, melanoma and mast cell tumours. Kathleen lectures students and examines for candidates becoming specialists and is a recognised trainer of specialist oncologists in Australia. Kathleen is a founding partner of the Brisbane Animal Referral Hospital.

Kathleen is also kept busy with her beautiful sons, wonderful husband and one very old Siberian Husky.

Dr Elizabeth Morgan

Oncology Specialist

Elizabeth graduated from the University of Queensland in 2010. After graduating she spent two years working in mixed practice in Northern New South Wales. After returning to Queensland and working in small animal practice for 12 months she commenced a 12-month rotating internship at a referral practice in Brisbane. 

Elizabeth then completed a 12-month oncology internship with current ARH oncologists, Kathleen O’Connell and Maurine Thomson, during which time she successfully passed her membership examinations in small animal internal medicine. She then commenced a residency and passed her ANZCVS fellowship examinations in veterinary oncology in 2020 and is a registered specialist in Veterinary Oncology.

Elizabeth is now a supervisor for oncology candidates and is currently the head examiner for Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists for Veterinary Oncology. 

She is particularly interested in haematopoietic tumours, mast cell tumours and is passionate about maintaining an excellent quality of life for her patients.

Outside of work, Elizabeth enjoys riding her horses or spending time with her family and  dogs  Faddy and Macca.

Dr Rosemary Soh

Oncology Resident

Rosemary is a Melbourne University graduate of 2014. She began her career working in different small animal practices, where she gained valuable experience in working with geriatric animals. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for Oncology and decided to specialize in this field.

After completing a year-long Oncology internship at an Animal Cancer clinic in Melbourne, Rosemary relocated to Brisbane to pursue a residency under the guidance of Dr. Morgan, Dr. O’Connell, and Dr. Thomson.

She is passionate about working with pet owners to tailor a treatment plan for cancer patients that prioritise their wellbeing.

In her free time, Rosemary enjoys spending time cuddling her British Shorthair, Prince Hubert, practicing pilates, and discovering Brisbane’s cafe scene.

Dr Imogen Geh

Veterinary Intern (Oncology)

Imogen graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2019.

She was born and raised in Adelaide, and worked in general practice for several years prior to moving to Brisbane. She enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, but has a particular interest in endocrinology, neurology and infectious disease.

In her spare time, Imogen enjoys a variety of ocean hobbies, including scuba diving and surfing, and loves to get lost in a good book.

Dr Christine Thomson

Neurology Specialist

BVSc (Hons), DACVIM (Neurol), DECVN, PhD.

Christine graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1983, and completed a small animal medical and surgical neurology residency at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine, USA, and a PhD in neuroscience at University of Glasgow, UK.

She is a Diplomate of both the American and European Veterinary Colleges of Neurology and has  worked at Melbourne, Glasgow, and Massey Universities, and latterly, in the Veterinary Medicine Department at University of Alaska. At the end of 2019, Christine swapped Alaska’s -30 0C for +30 0C here in Brisbane and started with the Animal Referral Hospital.

Along with her colleague, Dr Caroline Hahn, Christine has distilled decades of study and teaching about clinical neuroanatomy and neurological localisation into the text book, Veterinary Neuroanatomy: a clinical Approach (Elsevier 2012). Additionally, she has authored/co-authored more than 40 scientific papers ranging from neurobiology and neuronal cell culture to the neurological examination of seals, and spoken at national and international conferences.

Dr Amber Giles

Diagnostic Imaging Veterinarian

Amber graduated from James Cook University in North Queensland in 2012. She then worked as a vet in Cairns for four years before moving to the Sunshine Coast. It was while working at the Sunshine Coast that Amber discovered her passion for diagnostic imaging and started to focus her career around this area.

She has continued to study, and has completed a Certificate in Diagnostic Imaging through Massey University. In 2021, she will sit her Memberships through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Diagnostic Imaging.

Amber hopes to continue her passion and attain specialist qualification in diagnostic imaging. Amber has a boxer dog called Lego, and in her spare time she enjoys Muay Thai, going to the gym, eating great food and going to the beach.
