The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) is seeking a small animal surgeon to join our dynamic specialist practice in Brisbane, Australia.  Our hospital opened in June 2017 and since that time the surgery service caseload has increased rapidly.

Our team: At ARH we offer a 24 hour a day, 365 day a year veterinary service that truly has the client at the centre.  We have specialists in surgery, internal medicine and oncology who work collaboratively and closely with referring veterinarians, clients and our emergency service to provide the highest level of patient care.  Our emergency and critical care (ECC) veterinarians support our specialist services after hours and at weekends. ECC is intrinsically linked to our referral service, offering exceptional case transition and support. Our surgery department is currently supported by two interns and a highly experienced team of surgical nurses.

Our hospital: ARH is a new 1100sqm (12000 sqft) facility equipped with a comprehensive selection of plating systems, Imex circular and SK external fixation, Ligasure Force Triad, Styker arthroscopy and endoscopy, a Smith and Nephew dedicated negative pressure wound therapy unit and many more tools of the trade. The hospital is also equipped with flexible endoscopy equipment, two ultrasound suites with a dedicated cardiac machine, Philips C-arm fluoroscopy, Fuji DR suite, and a GE Brightspeed 16 slice CT.  Our fully equipped lab offers haematology, chemistry, blood gas, and coagulation capabilities. MRI is readily available, with an on site GE 1.5T MRI being installed soon.

Our city: Brisbane, which is Australia’s third largest city, is a vibrant, progressive and highly liveable city. There are 2.4 million people living in the greater Brisbane area and it is a fast growing city which manages to maintain a relaxed feel. We have world class beaches within a one hour drive and enjoy a sub tropical climate with an average of 283 days of sunshine each year.

The position: This is a full time (four days a week) position with a one in three on call roster. We currently see a high volume of orthopaedic and neurosurgical cases and have an expanding soft tissue surgery caseload. ARH provides a generous compensation and benefits package. Leave includes four weeks annual leave and one week of conference leave.  A veterinary degree registerable in Australia with specialist qualifications (FANZCVS, DACVS or DECVS) is required, although surgeons who have completed residency training and are intending to sit specialist exams soon are invited to apply.

The successful Candidate will possess:

  • Certificate IV in veterinary nursing and/or Bachelor of Applied Science (Veterinary Technology) degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 12 months experience in referral (specialist hospital) or emergency nursing
  • Availability to work nights, weekends and public holidays and assist with short-notice shift cover if required
  • A friendly, easy going nature and be able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A strong work ethic and the ability to work efficiently and multi-task
  • Demonstrate consistently high quality of patient care even in busy conditions
  • Excellent communication skills

Desirable Attributes

  • Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (Emergency and Critical Care)
  • Experience in monitoring critical and ventilated patients
  • Previous experience in an emergency or specialist hospital
  • Knowledge of RX works, Smartflow and Idexx blood machines

The position

We are currently searching for Emergency Veterinarians to join our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) team. The ideal candidate will be energetic, positive and someone who thrives in a busy, multi-discipline hospital environment. The ECC Veterinarian will rotate through day, night, evening and weekend shifts. Flexibility around hours is essential. Emergency experience is desirable but not essential. ECC veterinarians will report to and work under the guidance of boarded Criticalist, Dr Monique Stanley who is the director the Brisbane ECC Department.

You have excellent communication, organisation and time management skills and have a passion for exceptional patient care and clinical service. You enjoy working as a team but also flourish individually. With a positive and flexible attitude towards work and a good sense of humour, you’ll fit in nicely with our culture.  As this is a high performing team, you will also have the following skills and experience.

Required:

  • Right to work in Australia
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a veterinarian
